You can find lockers in Central Station Amsterdam (the Amsterdam city center) where you can store your luggage. These lockers can be found in the east wing of the station, in a room that is open daily.

1. Avoid Late Nights. If you are spending time in Amsterdam, avoid extremely late nights near large train stations and other people sitting around drinking alcohol. These areas can be dangerous and pose a risk of robbery or another crime, especially after dark.

There is no official size or weight restrictions, however luggage must not be so big or heavy that it cannot be handled by a single person. Luggage should be stored in overhead luggage racks, under the seats or in one of the luggage compartments located near the doors or in the middle of the carriage.

Bringing Your Food Aboard

You may bring your own food and beverages onboard for consumption at your seat or private Sleeping Car accommodations. However, you can only consume food and beverages purchased in Dining and Lounge Cars in those cars.

Checked Baggage

Each traveler can check up to 4 bags (2 free and 2 at $20 per bag). Size/weight limitations apply.

Keep your luggage in a cool, dry place with a constant temperature and some airflow. Avoid storing your suitcase in an attic or basement, but if you must, be sure to use a dehumidifier or silica packets.

Small cases and bags can be stored under your seat, medium sized bags can go in the overhead racks and large suitcases must be placed in the luggage racks at the end of each carriage.

While 4 hours can allow you some time to see the city, we recommend at least a 6-hour layover in Amsterdam. A 6-7 hour layover will allow you to comfortably see Amsterdam without having to snap a quick picture of the nearest canal before rushing back to the airport.

Can I leave the airport during a 5 hour layover in Amsterdam? ›

You are absolutely allowed to leave the airport during a layover in Amsterdam. However, keep in mind that when you return to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, you will have to go through security and customs again.

If you checked a bag, you'll have to collect it from baggage claim from the international flight. You'll need to clear customs and immigration. Next, you'll recheck your luggage for the domestic flight. Finally, you'll need to go through Transportation Security Administration screening.
